Seeking more money to maintain local roads, the city of Wauwatosa could raise an estimated $3 million annually through a proposed fee on property owners, including businesses, based on how many car trips they generate. The proposed transportation utility is designed to have a lower impact on homeowners than relying on the property tax, and would portion a higher share of road costs to commercial properties. That plan could be voted on by elected officials in July. Other Wisconsin communities have already created transportation utilities and were sued by opponents including Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce.
